His previous campaign, Neelam, portrayed the rise of armed Tamil liberation groups. The censor board of India refused to ban and deport Neelam on the grounds that it contained a reference to the armed struggle for an independent state and therefore risked deteriorating relations with Sri Lanka. The director had earlier said that he was inspired by the blocking battles that Neelam faced.
